My air conditioner does not run at all. Not even the blower.
There are a lot of reasons why an air conditioner may not run. The first thing to check is the thermostat. Is the screen blank? Or very dim? Some thermostats take batteries. See if your does and if they do, replace them. Next, check the breaker. Is it tripped? If yes, reset it but if it trips right away, do not reset it again. If it trips right a way, there is a a problem that must be fixed. Sometimes it is a failed motor and if the motor is the compressor, you can cause additional damage to the system by resetting it more than once. If it resets but trips again later, resetting it too many times may cause additional damage. You need someone to look at it. The last thing that keeps units from running are fuses. Most units have a disconnect mounted to the unit or to the house near it. It probably has fuses in it. If you have a meter, you can check them to see if or both are bad. If they are bad, you want someone to check the unit before replacing them. Most units also have a low voltage fuse somewhere inside. That fuse usually only blows if you have a damaged wire somewhere. Sometimes it is the thermostat wire. Is it sun damaged? Did your dog eat it? Do you have a problem wit pack rats? Other times a wire inside the unit has been rubbing on something for 5 years and finally rubbed through it. The wire needs to be found and fixed.
I hear my air conditioner running but it is not blowing air.
Two things can cause this. First is the blower motor or the controls for the blower motor has failed. This will likely require someone to look at it. Second is a frozen indoor coil. When the coil freezes, It literally becomes a solid block of ice which stops all air movement. Sometimes when this happens, you may feel cool air drifting down from the filter. If this happens and you have a heat pump, you may be able to run it in heat for about 20 minutes to melt the ice. Do this by turning you thermostat to heat and setting the set point as high as it goes. If your house is already hotter that the thermostat’s highest setting or if you have gas heat, you need to turn your blower to the on position and the mode switch(cool, off, heat) to off and wait about four hours. If you start to get airflow, then it was definitely frozen. When it thaws, you should be able to turn it back to cool after the four hours and get cooling. There are only 2 things that cause a coil to freeze, poor airflow or a refrigerant problem. Five things cause poor airflow. First is the blower issues I addressed this above. Second is the filter. I have seen people use a filter that is too good and it has caused the coil to freeze. The filter could be too dirty. Change it. Third is a dirty indoor coil. Please do not try to clean it. It is fragile and if you do it wrong, you can cause bigger problems. Fourth is damaged or collapsed ductwork. Fifth is a refrigerant problem. All of these need a technician to look at it. You may have a leak causing your system to be low on refrigerant. Believe it or not, low refrigerant causes the inlet of the coil to run really cold which causes the coil to freeze up. You may also have debris in the system which causes a restriction in the refrigerant flow.
My blower is running but the air is not cool.
There are quite a few issues that cause this and almost all of them need a technician to look at it. I will cover a few basic things you might be able to address. All air conditioners have to deal with condensation. If you have a split system, which is half of the system on the ground and the other half in the house somewhere, you may have a condensate safety device that turns the unit off if the condensate quits draining. You will have to clear the drain to get it to start working. Please don’t attempt to bypass this device because it will cause a flood in your house. The next is with the unit on the ground. You may have a breaker or fuse problem out there. Please see, “My air conditioner does not run at all. Not even the blower.” above. You will not have a low voltage fuse issue with this problem. Anything else really should have a technician look at the issue.
