Is my air conditioner really dead?

Oftentimes, the answer is no. Unfortunately, many people are told that they need a new unit, when in fact, that is not the case. So, why are so many units being condemned prematurely? This usually happens when technicians work on commission. Other times, the technician is just lazy and doesn’t want to perform the labor to complete the repair. It is uncomfortable standing on a roof for one to four hours in the hot Arizona sun. If the repair needs to be performed in an attic, the repair may seem even more undesirable. It is much easier for a technician to diagnose a high dollar item in order to scare you away from a repair than it is for them to dig into your unit and figure out what is really wrong. That will never happen to you with Hometown AC.

Do I really have to replace my AC?

If the cost of fixing a unit is greater than getting a new unit, it makes sense to get a new unit, however, it all comes down to trusting the technician’s diagnosis. For instance, compressors are very expensive and are usually the first thing a commission technician may blame. If the compressor really is bad, it may be worth it to just replace the unit, however, fifty percent of the time, I can get them running.

The second reason air conditioners are condemned is due to refrigerant problems, especially if your unit uses the old refrigerant(R22). Yes, R22 is very expensive, but it is still available.

Sadly, Covid-19 has had an impact on our industry. It may take three to five weeks for a unit to come in. Many technicians out there don’t really understand the discomfort that creates for their customers. Enduring weeks in a hot house is no fun, and going to a hotel is often inconvenient. Luckily, in most cases, a unit can be repaired and doesn’t need to be replaced unless it is just too old. Give me a call and let’s see if there is something I can do to get your system up and running.

How long should an air conditioner last?

There are quite a few air conditioners out there. All manufacturers have what is known as builders grade equipment. They make this equipment as cheap as they can to get the builders to buy them. They also make upper level equipment they are proud of and promote. If you have a unit that was installed when your house was built, it is probably builders grade quality. This kind of unit, on average, last 10 years. The better equipment, on average, will last about 15 years.
